Conversations About Bioethics

Overview
In South Lake Union, the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research (NWABR) and our partners at 415 Westlake (Union and Kákao) are connecting diverse members of the public through monthly Community Conversations.  Given the concentration of biomedicine and growing residential culture in this neighborhood, it is natural to create these informal discussions at the interface of medicine, ethics and research.

Purpose
Community Conversations strive to create knowledge through conversation about medical science in the context of society.  Every participant is valued not because they are experts in the field, but because they are curious, have meaningful life experience and are willing to explore topics with other open-minded individuals.

Conversation is fueled by appetizeDr. Alvin Thompsonrs, coffee and wine. A single question ignites the conversation and may be enhanced by reading or viewing suggested materials (e.g. short articles, media headlines, film clips) prior to the event.  This food for thought, navigated by the facilitator, serves to reveal nuances of issues that pervade biomedical research while reflecting on personal perspectives.  In some cases, these interactions will result in meaningful visioning that addresses challenges in science.  In all cases salons will conclude with opportunities for action to support biomedical research.  This may include participating in online discussion forums, signing up for Resear chMatch, serving as advisors or community members on IRB and IACUC committees or communicating with government officials.

“I enjoyed the NWABR Community Conversations….The setting was perfect….People brought up some interesting points that I had not considered.”
