The Student Bio Expo is a unique program that engages high school students in creative ways to demonstrate their understanding of the life sciences, and that connects them to scientists and resources in the community. The 2009 culminating event will be held on May 27th, 2009, at Meydenbauer Center, Bellevue.

Be a Mentor, Inspire a Student!
Mentors are now needed for the 2009 Student Bio Expo! We hope you will consider participating in this award-winning life science education program for high school students. Information about the program, the role of the mentor, the time commitment and sign-up link can be found on our Advisor Information Page!

I lean forward in my chair, deep in concentration. I can almost feel pieces of information flying through my brain; my brain is in overdrive trying to pin them down. Blood-brain barrierprotein-based drugs…petit mal…lamotrigine…What does it all mean? I’m slowly trying to tame this tempest of concepts I’m learning into something coherent. And I’m having the time of my life... Read about one student's Expo Experience...

CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations to Michelle Kriner (2nd place Expo Research Award Winner, 2006) for being named an Amgen Scholar for this summer at Stanford University!

Congratulations to Jolene Mork (Intel Science Search National Finalist, 2006, and Honorable Mention, Expo Research Award Winner, 2006/2005), who has been awarded the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship, the premier national scholarship for undergraduate math, science and engineering students. Jolene is an undergraduate at Carleton College, majoring in Biological Chemistry. Her career goals, which were shaped by her Expo experience at Amgen, are to conduct original research in biochemistry or immunology at either a university or a biotechnology/pharmaceutical company.

We are excited to announce that Expo teacher Mario Godoy-Gonzalez (Royal High School) has been named a finalist for the 2008 Genzyme-Invitrogen Biotech Educator Award. Congratulations, Mario! The award was established by the Biotechnology Institute to recognize leading high school educators who are bringing biotechnology to their classrooms and encouraging fellow science teachers to do the same.

Royal High School has just received more funding support: Mario's proposal "Using Biotechnology to Connect Rural High School Students with the Scientific Community" has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Michael Jordan Fundamentals Foundation!!!

The mission of the Student Biotech Expo is to promote an understanding of bioscience research among high school students. We provide access to scientific resources and engage students in new creative ways to demonstrate what they knowand are able to do within the disciplines of biotechnology and biomedicine. By connecting students, teachers, scientistsand the general public together, we strengthen our life sciences community.
