Expo Advisor Guidelines

The following list outlines our program rules and our advisor and mentor expectations. Please read through each point carefully to make sure you are meeting all guidelines.

  • Advisors/Mentors make the initial contact with students.
  • The student is responsible for being timely and reliable about meeting times. Please model this behavior as well.
  • The student is responsible for doing all of his or her own work.
  • Students are responsible for their own transportation. Advisors are not to transport students or arrange for any meetings other than at the workplace or a supervised school site.
  • For the protection of the advisor and the student, meetings should be in the presence of other employees during regular business hours. If this is not possible, meetings can be arranged to occur at the school, or with a parent present.
  • Be familiar with project criteria and deadlines. The specific criteria for each project can be found at the category requirement page. If your student doesn’t meet the deadlines for their outline and rough draft, please contact their teacher.
  • The student is responsible for doing he or her own work
  • Please ensure that the student gives you a fully signed copy of any necessary permission slips required by your institution before allowing student access to laboratory areas at your workplace.
  • Students may not work with radioactive materials or bloodborne pathogens. Since the students are participating in a career pathway program, they are not excluded from observing others at work. The level of access may be determined at each individual site, but students may under no circumstances work with the above.
  • Please ensure that the students have an introduction to workplace safety relevant to the areas they will be visiting. It is wise to mention safety rules that may seem obvious such as hand-washing, no eating, protective gloves, etc.
  • Make sure to keep a copy of the student emergency contact information handy.
