Registration Deadline

The 2007-2008 Deadline for Registration is November 9, 2007. Be sure to register before that date, especially if you need help finding an advisor or mentor! If you are participating with your class, be sure you have turned in any pre-registration materials required by your teacher before registering.

Who can register?

You do not need to be enrolled in a class of a participating teacher to register. The Expo is open to all. If you participated last year, you may join us again with a significantly different project.

Should I sign up for an Advisor or Mentor?

You have the choice between having an advisor, a mentor, finding your own advisor, or opting out of the advisor program. An Advisor agrees to read your project outline, rough draft, and be in contact using e-mail or over the phone. A Mentor participates in the same way an advisor does, but in addition may be willing to meet you in person (in a public place), or offer a tour, an interview or job-shadow opportunity. If both the student and advisor are willing, an advisor relationship can always grow into a mentorship. NWABR will strive to find an advisor or mentor for every student that wants one. We also encourage students to find contacts in the community themselves.

YES -
You should sign up for an advisor or mentor if you are serious about getting advice on your project from a science professional. Although your advisor may not be an 'expert' in your topic, they have a strong science background and can help you with many aspects of your project. In addition, when completing your project you will be requested to comment on your 'use of resources'. Having an advisor shows that you are motivated to use resources well, and will help you in creating an excellent project.

NO - Don't sign up for an advisor or mentor if you don't have enough time to follow through with your request. Advisors want to help, and if their students don't contact them for assistance they feel as though an opportunity has been missed! If you don't follow through with your advisor you are preventing another student from having access to that resource. If you already have an advisor, we encourage them to sign up on our mentor form so that we may properly follow through with them. You may still be able to do a great project without an advisor, especially if you use other resources available to you.

What does an advisor do?

-Helps you select from various ideas you may have or assists you in narrowing down/defining a project

-Assists in finding resources that may be relevant to your topic

-Helps you to interpret and make sense of the resources that you find

-Reviews your outline and project drafts and provides feedback, if you have given them enough time to do so

-Talks with you about science careers and opportunities

What does a mentor do?

-In addition to giving you feedback on your project and helping you with resources, a mentor may also show you their lab/workplace, or allow you to tour or job shadow.

-A mentor may also help you conduct a scientific research project. If you are interested in the lab research option, you will be required to do an in-person interview with your potential advisor before you are accepted to work on a project.

-For students interested in research, some mentors may be able to provide resources and support for lab experiments conducted at your school.

What should I do once I am assigned to a mentor or advisor?

It is very important that you demonstrate professional behavior and prompt follow-through when interacting with advisors and mentors. We use the same advisors year after year, and those relationships are very important to us.

You need to communicate with your advisor within one week of receiving the initial contact from the advisor or mentor, or else risk losing the advisor to another student in need.

Please contact Evelyn Laminack at elaminack@nwabr.org if you are having trouble getting in touch with your advisor.

MENTOR AND ADVISOR LISTS

  • Please think about your other activities and carefully assess your available time to meet with a mentor if selecting from the mentor list.
  • Advisors and mentors in YELLOW have already been matched and are no longer available to work with students.
  • Please select your top 3 choices for advisors or mentors (select only those in white and blue) from the list or let us know if you have found your own advisor or mentor.
  • You will be asked to enter the ID number (found on the left and right of the each entry) of your top 3 advisors when you sign up online so be sure to write these carefully. We will make every effort to match you according to your choice, however, we do not guarantee one of your top 3 advisors.
  • Be sure to scroll to the end of each entry to view the advisor or mentor’s job description and comments. If you can't read all the information in a box, click on that box and the full information will appear at the top of the screen.
  • If you are interested in the research category, please be sure to select a mentor whose research option matches your own level. Not all mentors can work with students in their labs but many are able to provide materials and support for experiments conducted at your school.
  • Please contact your teacher or Evelyn Laminack at elaminack@nwabr.org if you have questions regarding the advisor lists.
