Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome was first described by Dr. Carlo Urbani on March 10, 2003, but has been around
since November of 2002. Since then it has infected more than 8000 people and claimed the lives of over 700. It
greatly hindered the world's economy during it's outbreak of 2003, and effected lifestyles of many countries.
This website is dedicated to informing students of what SARS is and how it has impacted our world and
society. To the left of this text is the navigation which includes pages that describe in general what SARS is, the
symptoms, how SARS is spread, how to prevent the spread of SARS, what kind of a virus SARS is, a summary of who Dr.
Carlo Urbani is, how SARS has been treated, the impact of SARS, and a conclusion which includes what is currently
happening with SARS.
I chose to do this topic because it had impacted my family and me. We have family over in Asia, and when
the news came to be, my family was alert, and my parents even went out and bought masks. I wanted to learn about
how contagious SARS was, and how it was spreading so quickly.
