About

My name is Joey Bodzewski, and I am from Seattle, Washington. I am sixteen years old and a junior at Ballard High school. I am a part of the Biotech Academy, in this program I was required to create an expo project for an exposition. This exposition invited many schools around the Seattle area to come together, it was similar to a science fair accept it was a competition between schools and their students, not students with in a class. I entered the exposition, with this project, this web page. I decided to create a website on Parkinson’s because I have a dear friend who has Parkinson’s along with his dad. I thought that I could do something to help out.

Mentorship

We were required to have a mentor for the exposition, I was lucky enough to be assigned to a Dr. Ken Brasel of Zymogenetics. He was very helpful in many ways. He helped me with the web site, editing and such. Also with understanding Parkinson’s, especially with process’ of Parkinson’s, and its effect on the nervous system. He also helped me out a lot with the stem cell research, he taught me a lot about how they work and the problems scientists have getting them to work and putting them to use. I have never had a mentor before, it was a completley new experience to me, but it was a good one. I have to admitt at first I was quite shy to meet him and all, but once we met everything just clicked. I learned alot from him, and once again I was very lucky to have Dr. Brasel as my mentor helping me along with my project making sure I was on top of things.

Credits

Here are some websites that helped me out a lot with the creation of my website, and I believe could help you out also. Some were great with information and content, others were better with helping people with Parkinson’s, and could be very helpful to you. Please take a look at these other web pages.

  • Somerset Pharmaceuticals, Inc. "About Parkinson's." 1998. Somerset Pharmaceuticals, Inc. January, 2nd, 2006.http://www.parkinsonsinfo.com/about_parkinsons
  • This website was very helpful to me in a number of ways. It was especially good in the sense, that it explained how Parkinson’s worked and what it did to those who were diagnosed with it, much more clearly than other websites. I also used some of the pictures it provided because they made things much easier to understand, that was one of the main goals I had for the website, to make things easy for the viewer. I would recommend the Parkinson’s info website to anyone who liked this website, it has similar information, and can be very valuable to those who have Parkinson’s.

  • M.J. Farabee. "The Nervous System." M.J. Farabee. 2001. January, 15th, 2006.http://www.emc.maricopa.edu/faculty/farabee/BIOBK/BioBookNERV.html
  • This website was also quite helpful, though at first it was relatively difficult to understand. After reading the entire page I started to get a strong grasp over the set up of the nervous system. I would recommend reading an easier website first, before reading this one, it may make it a bit easier to understand when you get to reading this one.

  • Denoon Daniel. "WebMD." WebMD. Giant Step Toward Parkinson's Cure. 2006. February 1st, 2006.http://www.webmd.com/content/article/24/1833_50420
  • This website, or article was what gave me a lot of the information on the developing cures of Parkinson’s, along with my mentor. Stem cells were something not quite new to me, but I still had to learn more about them. This website did that for me, and gave me a solid thesis; the future of Parkinson’s patience would be “brighter”, with this new finding.

  • N.P.F. "National Parkinson Foundation." Bill McConaughy. 2004. Kintera. February 1st, 2006.http://www.parkinson.org/site/pp.asp?c=9dJFJLPwB&b=71117
  • This website would be very good for those who have Parkinson’s and those who are caretakers for those who have Parkinson’s. It is updated weekly and has a lot of information on medication, prototype medication, and has a neat little tool, which you can use to find a local support group. It is run by the NPF (National Parkinson’s Foundation), which is a very well-known, reliable organization, which can be trusted.

  • Tannishtha Reya, Sean J. Morrison, Michael F. Clarke, Irving L. Weissman. "Stem cells, cancer, and cancer stem cells." Nature, 414 (November 1st, 2001): 105-111.
  • This article was extrmely helpful in conveying how stem cells work. For some reason stem cells were a difficult concept for me to grasp. The article gave me a better idea on the obstacles sientists need to overcome to master the stem cell. Although the article focused mainly on cancer cells and how stem cells could cure cancer, I was able to relate it to Parkinson's or any disease for that matter.

  • Kluger, Jeffrey. "Parkinson's Disease." Time Magazine, Drugs of the Future (January 15th, 2001): 828 words.
  • This article gave me general information on Parkinson's disease, the symptoms, present drugs, future drugs, possible cures etc... It had alot of information, but alot of it was really vague, and thus not too helpful. In my webpage I tried to get a little more detailed, and alot of the stuff in this article I already knew.

  • Interview with Sam Jewell
  • Sam Jewell is a dear friend of mine who's dad has Parkinson's, which was a major part of why I decided to create a web page on this disease. I interviewed him at his house, face to face. Although I did not quote him in my web page or use any of his information directly, Sam gave me a good feeling of what it is like to have Parkinson's and what its like to live with someone with Parkinson's. Actually a lot of the information he gave me was inspriing. It turns out his dad does a lot of hands on work, like carpentry work, obviously the disease isn't getting in the way of his life.
