EFFICIENCY
Producing biodiesel is a lot more energy efficient than producing petroleum diesel. It only takes 0.31 units of
fossil energy to produce 1 unit of biodiesel. On the other hand, it takes 1.2 units of fossil energy to produce
a unit of petroleum diesel. This means that more biodiesel can be made with less energy. For every unit of
biodiesel produce, 3.2 units of energy are gained.
A common
misconception is that biodiesel does not perform as well as petroleum diesel. The fact is that biodiesel can perform
just as well as petroleum diesel. In off-road as well as on-road testing, biodiesel has shown similar fuel consumptions, torque and horsepower
