Figure 12: Plaque caused by cholesterol buildup effects blood flow and therefore causes CHD
How is this linked to fats you may ask? Well, both saturated fat and trans fat increase the amount of LDL’s that are in the bloodstream; and this LDL in the bloodsteam is what causes the buildup of plaque deposits in the arteries via increased cholesterol. But the primary reason why trans fat is worse than saturated fat, or any other fats, is because trans fat not only does it increase the LDL's in the bloodstream, but it decreases the amount of HDL's in the bloodstream. HDL's are responsible for moving cholesterol from your heart to your liver, or more simply, removing cholesterol from the bloodstream. Thus, the amount of cholesterol in the body increases and the body then also lacks the ability to remove this cholesterol. This leaves any trans fat consuming individual in a major dilemma.
