DNA-LEAP Educator Symposium

DNA-LEAP Educator Symposium

A one-time symposium providing professional development and curriculum related to genetics and genomics to middle and high school science teachers, presented by a collaboration of outreach providers.

Middle and high school science teachers joined us for a special professional development day presented by the DNA Life Sciences Education Advancement Partnership (DNA-LEAP)!  Science teachers learned about genetic resources available through some of the Northwest's most highly recognized outreach organizations.  We were excited to welcome Edward Ramos, PhD., research fellow and a science policy analyst at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), National Institutes of Health, as our keynote speaker.

What We Accomplished

  • increased teacher understanding of genetics and genomics, including ethical issues related to genetic research
  • increased educator awareness about programs and resources related to teaching genetics, genomics, and bioethics concepts
  • inroduced resources available from NHGRI
  • fostered a learning community among education outreach professionals and teachers geared towards improving genetics education

DNA-LEAP was made possible by the support of a 2010 DNA DAY award to NWABR from the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health.
