John Roll

John Roll served on the NWABR Board of Directors from 2017-2022.  He is a Professor and the Vice Dean for Research for the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine as well as the Associate Vice President for Health Sciences Research for Washington State University (WSU). He is the Founding Director of the WSU Program of Excellence in Addictions Research (PEAR) and is the Co-Director of the WSU Translational Addiction Research Center (TARC). Dr. Roll holds faculty appointments in the WSU Departments of Medicine, Psychology, Neuroscience, Prevention Science, Nutrition Exercise and Physiology and Health Policy Administration. He was appointed by WA State Governor Gregoire as an Executive Commissioner on the Eastern State Hospital Advisory Board and as a Vice Chair of the Governor's Council on Substance Abuse. Roll is a Fellow of the following organizations: American Psychological Association, Association for Behavior Analysis International, Association for Psychological Science, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is an elected member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences. In addition to serving with NWABR, Dr. Roll currently serves on the Spokane Regional Health District Community Health Assessment Board (full board and steering committee) and the Better Health Together Leadership Council. 

John has served as a faculty member and in other leadership roles at Wayne State University, UCLA, Washington Institute for Mental Health Research and Training and WSU. He has published more than 125 scholarly articles. As of 2/21/17, his work has been cited 4345 times. He has been a mentor to many graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty.  Dr. Roll has served on review committees for various agencies including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr. Roll earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Montana, a Master of Arts degree from Saint Bonaventure University, and a PhD from Washington State University. He completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Behavioral Pharmacology at the University of Vermont and a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Substance Abuse Research at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor.
