Robert H. Mealey, DVM, PhD Diplomate ACVIM

Dr. Mealey is a Professor in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University. He is veterinarian with a clinical specialty in equine internal medicine and is board certified in large animal internal medicine by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM). Dr. Mealey’s research area is blood-borne/vector-borne infectious diseases of horses, and his projects have focused on identifying correlates of immune protection against equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV), Theileria equi (the cause of equine piroplasmosis), and more recently, viruses associated with liver disease including equine hepacivirus and equine pegivirus. Currently, equine hepacivirus infection is being developed as a new animal model for hepatitis C (HCV). Dr. Mealey’s research has been funded by the NIH, USDA, and Grayson Jockey Club, and he has served on grant review panels for all three organizations. Dr. Mealey is the Robert B. McEachern Distinguished Professor of Equine Medicine, the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Director of the Animal Health Research Center.
