February 27, 2018 - NWABR Spring IACUC Conference (Registration Fees Ranging From $295 to $475)
- A one day meeting on February 27, 2018 covering hot topics related to animal care and use, led by facilitators from around the United States.
- Exhibit tables on February 27, 2018 so attendees can meet with those in the field providing valuable resources and service.
NWABR will once again be working with the Office of Animal Care at the University of Washington to arrange a complimentary program that will showcase strategies to improve animal care programs.
Background
For the past 19 years NWABR has offered an annual IACUC conference for IACUC Committee members, veterinarians, animal techs and researchers. This leading regional conference is designed by a volunteer Planning Committee. The members of the Planning Committee passionately care about the ethical use of animals in research and have designed this conference to meet the needs of both new and experienced practitioners.
As always the aim of this conference will be to provide you with up to date information that will directly inform your day to day work and allow for much needed networking.

Monday February 26, 2018 – Bridging the Gap Facility Tour of University of Washington Animal Care Facilities – Free (attendance limited to 20 participants)

1.00pm | Bridging the Gap Participants will have the choice of attending two of three possible sessions. Session choices include: 1. Facility Tour: Tour of the University of Washington’s new 84,000 sq ft ‘state-of-the-art’ Animal Research and Care Facility. 2. eIACUC and CUSP: Presentation on the Office of Animal Welfare’s recent experience implementing a new eIACUC system and the creation of the Compliance Unit Standard Procedure (CUSP) sharing site. 3. Mouse Wet Lab: Hands-on wet lab experience with mice to learn submental (chin) blood collection and oral gavage dosing. Participants must be proficient in mouse handling to attend this session.

8:35 – 9:05 | Review of the Basics Protocol Review | Greg Timmel (OHSU) | During this session, faculty will cover the aspects a committee needs to consider as part of the review process, including: understanding why the research is being done and what will happen to the animals from start to finish; the intersections with other committees (e.g., IBC); the roles of committee members; and formal protocol review processes.
