The 17th Annual NWABR Student Bio Expo was held on Friday May 19, 2017 at Shoreline Community College. NWABR's Student Bio Expo is a yearlong program that provides a platform for students to learn about and showcase their knowledge of biotechnology, biomedicine and bioethics. There were 324 students participating from 22 Puget Sound schools with 110 science mentors and 65 Judges. It was another great year for the Student Bio Expo!
There are 14 Expo Categories: Art, Career Pathways, Creative Writing, Drama/Dance, Indigenous Science, Journalism, Lab Research, Molecular Modeling, Multimedia, Music, SeaVuria, SMART team (3D-printing), Teaching and Website. This approach reflects the Next Generation Science Standards, based in Personalized Student Learning (students choosing a topic of their own choice) and linked to deep science content plus rigorous technical reading and writing. At left, 3rd place SMART winners from Tesla High School Rahul, Anjali and Ashiana.
Our dynamic Keynote Speaker, Austin Wright-Pettibone, is a senior undergraduate at the UW who is the youngest student to ever serve on the UW Board of Regents. He gave an engaging talk on perseverance and leadership that captivated the student participants.
The Expo Award Ceremony celebrated the2017 student winners. The year’s People Choice Award was won by Iman Tanumihadja, Shorecrest High School on Lung Cancer (Multimedia) and the Judges Cup of Excellence was won by Foster High School.
