SEASONAL STAFF OPPORTUNITIES:
Looking for Experienced Teachers for Camp BIOmed!!
Background
NWABR's mission is to promote the understanding of biomedical research and its ethical conduct. NWABR is dedicated to strengthening public trust in biomedical research, through education and dialogue. Through our diverse membership of academic, industry, non-profit research institutes, health care, and voluntary health organizations and extensive education programs, we foster a shared commitment to the ethical conduct of research and ensure the vitality of the life sciences community.
Camp BIOmed is a new summer camp open to students entering 9th-12th grade for the upcoming school year. Camp sessions will repeat for 7 weeks from July 6-August 21, 2015.
Throughout the summer camps, students will take part in hands-on experiments, track their own findings as part of these experiments in lab journals, and probably tour local Seattle biomedical organizations. Each week of the summer camp will conclude with a culminating Expo where campers will share all group and individual projects and contributions.
The three summer camp programs include:
- Do It Yourself Science Laboratory
-Origami of Life with Bioinformatics
Our staff to camper ratio is a maximum of 1 adult instructor to 12 students.
Job Responsibilities:
- Teach students as they take part in hands-on experiments, track student progress through each week, and possibly tour local Seattle biomedical organizations.
- Supervise a culminating Expo where campers will share all group and individual projects and contributions.
- Teachers will need to work with NWABR staff and our partner organizations to finalize curriculum to connect NWABR curriculum with our partner organization curriculum.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must be passionate about science. Candidates need experience teaching students in high school or college, with a background in biology/chemistry, bioethics, biotechnology, or engineering
Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates with a PhD in any of the following fields: biology/chemistry, bioethics, biotechnology, or engineering. Candidates should have experience teaching high school/college students.
Time Commitment:
- 20-30 hours hours of curriculum development (flexible to your schedule in May)
- 40-hour work week for the 7 weeks of Camp (July 6-August 21); Monday-Friday 9AM to 3 PM
All staff will be contractors and not eligible for any benefits. A competitive contractor rate will be provided for the teachers.
