FAQs

  1. Who should apply?
You should apply to the Student Research Fellows program if you will be sophomore or junior during the 2013-2014 school year and are interested in science.

A GPA of 3.0 or higher is recommended, although students with lower grades and strong teacher recommendations will also be considered.

We especially encourage students from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in science to apply (African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American students, students who qualify for free/reduced lunch and students who are the first in their immediate family who plan to attend college).

This is not a residential program. Students must provide their own room and board for the two-week period, although lunches will be provided.

  2. When and where will the program be held?
Program Orientation Meeting for Students and Parents: May 7, 2013, 4-6 pm

    Summer Program: June 21 - July 3, 2013 in Seattle-area research institutions

School Year Follow-Up: May 2014, exact date/location TBD
  3. Does it cost money?
No, all expenses will be paid, including daily lunch. When you complete the Summer Program, you will receive a stipend of $350 for two weeks. An additional $50 will be provided once you finish your school year project. Please note this is not a residential program; unfortunately we do not have funding to support students from outside the Seattle area.
  4. What is the application process?
You must submit an application form, teacher nomination form, and a transcript.
  5. What are my responsibilities?
You need to commit to all nine days of the Summer Program and two other meetings. You must also complete a project during the 2013-2014 school year, such as completing a project for the Student Bio Expo.

“Being a part of the Research Fellows made me a more informed ‘citizen scientist.’ I now know so much more about ethics and their role in the research and implementation of science. I also am now more familiar with the bio companies based locally in Seattle.”
